The Story Behind Chiu Quon Bakery

Chiu Quon Bakery was founded by Pui Yip and Cora Chiu in 1986. Their dream was simple: bring authentic Chinese baked goods to Chicago.

Their daughter, Joyce Chiu, and her husband, William Chan, carry the tradition forward. Together, they have upheld the bakery’s commitment to quality, tradition, and community.

The bakery is more than a business. It is a pillar in Chicago’s Chinatown. Its red signage and warm window displays have become a cultural landmark.

Chi Quon Bakery is a delightful spot offering a wide selection of both freshly baked and frozen goods, including buns, cakes, and pastries. The quality is consistently good, and there are plenty of options to satisfy both sweet and savory cravings. Keep in mind that it’s a cash-only establishment, but there’s an ATM available on-site, which is convenient if you forget to bring cash.

The cashier speaks some English, so it’s helpful to know exactly what you want to make the process easier. There is street parking available nearby, making it fairly simple to stop by. We went specifically for the douhua, but unfortunately, it wasn’t available during our visit.

Takeaway | Other | $1–10

This family-owned Chinese bakery has been around for generations, and it’s definitely worth a visit. One of my favorites here is the baked char siu buns, which are always delicious. Like many bakeries in Chicago’s Chinatown, this one is cash-only, so make sure you come prepared. While knowing some Chinese can be helpful, it’s not necessary to enjoy the experience.

Food: 4/5 | Service: 4/5 | Atmosphere: 4/5

Recommended Dish: BBQ Pork Bun
Parking: Finding parking near the bakery can be tricky. There are parking lots across the street from Chinatown, where you can park and walk to the bakery, but street parking near the bakery itself is very limited.
