“New Zealand was amazing, but GAdventures fell short.”I traveled solo on my first G Adventures trip, the 3-week New Zealand Multisport tour, and while New Zealand itself was fantastic, the experience with G Adventures didn’t quite measure up.
The good:
The locations we visited were great! The included activities like the sea and river kayaking tours with water taxi/jetboat support, the Waitomo glow worm caves, and Milford Sound were memorable. However, some activities didn’t quite meet expectations. The All Blacks experience, as well as the Rotorua “hangi” and Maori tour, were underwhelming. The coach was modern and comfortable, which was essential considering the long hours of travel. Our CEO (Chief Experience Officer) was excellent and added a lot of value to the trip. The not-so-good:
I initially thought the tour was priced well for a 3-week journey in an expensive country, but after experiencing the poor quality of most of the accommodations and the limited meals (mostly basic continental breakfasts), I felt the tour was overpriced. I was ready to spend more on excursions, but I later realized that I could have gotten group discounts directly. In fact, I found out my river rafting tour had a $50 discount if booked independently! (They refunded me when I asked). When I added up the costs of activities ($2,000) and meals ($1,000), the total came close to what I would have spent on a higher-end tour. The accommodations ranged from acceptable to downright poor. Many rooms were shared family rooms with just one large bed and bunk beds for kids. I got lucky with my roommate, though we couldn’t communicate much as she spoke very little English. Unfortunately, the group dynamic wasn’t great. Many people seemed uninterested in New Zealand’s wildlife and scenery, instead focusing on racing through activities like hiking, biking, and kayaking. One person even broke their bike chain from trying to go too fast!
By the end of the trip, the group started to feel quite cliquish, and there were a few entitled individuals who made the atmosphere uncomfortable, particularly when it came to bus seat arrangements. In the end, my experience was good, but I don’t think I would choose G Adventures again.
Pro Tip: Book last-minute for better discounts. My tour was originally priced at $6,500, but now it’s listed at $9,500, likely to offer big discounts. Be cautious about the value for money.
ii) Linda W: 2.5/5 (⭐⭐⭐) (03-05-2025)
I recently took my first and last trip with G Adventures’ Geluxe tour, traveling with three friends to Istanbul, Cappadocia, and the Turquoise Coast in late March/early April 2025. Our Turkish guide, Orçun, was a bright spot, but even his efforts couldn’t overcome the issues with the tour.
The real problem was the organization, lack of transparency, poor customer service, and dismal support from G Adventures. They refused to provide a detailed itinerary, making it impossible to plan free time. Additionally, the hotels were far from luxurious, with one hotel near Göcek being a total dump, located far from any activities or restaurants. After one night, we insisted on being moved.
The hotel in Cappadocia was above average but clearly designed for large groups, and it was located in an unpleasant area of Ortahisar. If you expect luxury from the Geluxe tour, you’ll be disappointed. This experience may also reflect broader issues with Turkey’s tourism sector, which, under the current political regime, struggles to offer a balanced experience between luxury and budget travel.
Turkey is a beautiful country, and the people are incredibly welcoming, but until G Adventures improves its offering, I’d recommend exploring other tour options or traveling independently.
